NYCU October 29, 2024 October 30, 2024 Advocacy, CMA, Controlled Substances, HOD, ICD-10, Infectious Disease, Medi-Cal, Physician Workforce, Practice Management, Prior Authorization, Public Health, SDCMS, Transgender Healthcare 0 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2024 PHYSICIANS: A week from today is November 5th, Election Day! If you haven’t already, please be sure to vote and urge your family members, co–workers, neighbors, and friends to cast a ballot in support of Proposition 35, the ‘Protect Our Health Care’ ballot initiative. This is one of the most significant health care ballot measures in California’s recent history. Prop 35 dedicates ongoing funding to increase access to care to the nearly 15 million Californians on Medi–Cal, including half of the state’s children. That is why passage of Proposition 35 has been the top political priority of California Medical Association and San Diego County Medical Society during this election year! SUCCESSFUL HOUSE OF DELEGATES MEETING NAMES SAN DIEGO WINNER OF VICTORY BELL AND ELECTS DR. RENE BRAVO AS NEXT CMA PRESIDENT–ELECT Your San Diego & Imperial representatives just returned from CMA’s Annual House of Delegates Sunday night, where we spent the weekend considering policies on the critical issues of Rural Health and Maternal Health Equity: Obstetric Deserts and Reproductive Health. The California Surgeon General and longtime CMA member Diana Ramos presented on the state’s effort to reduce maternal mortality by 50% by December 2026. Throughout the weekend, we received presentations from: Our own Toluwalasé Ajayi, Secretary of the AMA Board of Trustees. Dr. Ajayi told delegates about CA’s strong presence at the national level, as we bring our lived experience, our collective voice, and our collective power, to get things done on behalf of physicians and patients. Lupe Alonzo–Diaz spoke about Physicians for a Healthy California’s many grant programs working to create an equitable physician workforce. Our own Holly Yang presented on governance reforms being considered at CMA. CMA’s Senior Vice President Stuart Thompson gave highlights of CMA’s legislative year, including victories on AI, violence against health care workers, support for victims of human trafficking and physician mental health. David Ford, CEO of CMA’s Physician Services Organization, spoke about helping practices thrive. “The practices we support serve 3M+ patients, returning $100M+ back to practices through grants, subsidies and shared savings.” Learn more about CMA’s Physician Services Organization at CMADocs.org/PSO. I’d also like to offer a hearty congratulations to San Diego affiliate member Rene Bravo, voted President–Elect Sunday morning. Dr. Bravo will assume the CMA Presidency in October 2025. And finally, congratulations to our delegation for again winning the coveted Victory Bell, awarded for delegations that either have the highest total or average contribution to CALPAC, CMA’s political action committee. We have held the Victory Bell since the award’s inception in 2019. Operated by physicians for physicians, CALPAC supports hundreds of candidates for state and federal office who share CMA’s philosophy and vision of the future of health care and medical practice.
