NYCU June 2, 2020 June 2, 2020 CMA, COVID-19, General, Infectious Disease, Leadership, Public Health, SDCMS 0 TUESDAY, JUNE 2, 2020 PHYSICIANS: The San Diego County Medical Society Executive Committee, under the leadership of President Holly B. Yang, has issued a strong Statement on Racial Injustice: “The events in the week after George Floyd’s murder at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis have once again brought to light the deep distress in our country caused by repeated incidents of mistreatment of people of color by law enforcement and the criminal justice system. While we commend the dedication, sacrifice, and values of the profession of law enforcement, we cannot ignore the issues of racism and police violence and their traumatic impact on the well–being and health of our black and brown community members. “We acknowledge that racism, bias, and inequity are not isolated to the criminal justice system. They exist in all aspects of our society including public safety, healthcare, education, and access to resources and economic opportunity. The San Diego County Medical Society (SDCMS) is committed to working with the community and within the healthcare system to address bias, systemic racism, and inequality and their serious health consequences. The well-being of our community depends on our collective action.” To read the rest of the statement CLICK HERE. On another important subject, several Baja California Medical Associations have issued a letter of gratitude and acknowledgment for a number of San Diego volunteer physicians during the COVID–19 crisis in Tijuana who “solidarized with our health community, traveling daily to Tijuana, and supporting us in the care of our hospitalized patients. Additionally, they have provided us with regular donations of personal protective equipment and supplies necessary for the care of critically ill patients. That is why the medical and nursing community of the city of Tijuana wishes to sincerely thank this dynamic and philanthropic group for its invaluable support during this crisis…”. Among the physicians recognized are SDCMS Immediate Past President Jim Schultz, Andres Smith, and Jess Mandel. To see the full list and letter CLICK HERE.
