NYCU June 11, 2024 June 20, 2024 Champions for Health, CMA, CMA Benefits, Infectious Disease, Medi-Cal, Public Health, Regulations, SDCMS 0 TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 2024 PHYSICIANS: We are pleased to report that the California Medical Association–led initiative to expand access to and improve health care for all Californians took another important step forward as the ‘Protect Access to Care’ Initiative officially became eligible for the November 2024 ballot after counties throughout the state finished counting signatures submitted by our campaign coalition. The initiative will bring billions of dollars in federal funding to California to improve care for patients across the state, particularly the more than 15 million Californians, including half of the state’s children, who depend on Medi–Cal for health insurance. The initiative has already gained substantial support from a wide coalition of statewide and community organizations, physicians, other health care providers, community health centers, hospitals, labor unions, first responders, and elected officials, and is backed by both the California Democratic Party and the California Republican Party. CMA is chairing the ballot initiative committee. CMA PUBLISHES 2024 MID–YEAR LEGISLATIVE UPDATE As the California legislature enters the sixth month of the 2024 legislative year, the California Medical Association (CMA) has published a Mid–Year Legislative Update, which provides an up–to–date overview of CMA’s advocacy on legislation impacting California patients, the medical profession and public health for the 2024 legislative session. CMA successfully defeated several pieces of legislation that would have jeopardized patient safety by creating an exemption to the ban on the corporate practice of medicine; imposed burdensome regulations on physician practices; heightened the risk of unnecessary lawsuits against physician practices; and legislated the practice of medicine. Each of CMA’s sponsored bills for 2024 have also cleared their houses of origin and will continue to make their way through the Legislature. See CMA’s Mid–Year Legislative Update for an overview of the bills CMA has opposed or successfully negotiated in this session, as well as a look at the status of CMA’s sponsored bills.
