CMA ENDORSES PROPOSITION 1 ON MARCH 5 PRIMARY BALLOT

The California Medical Association has strongly endorsed Proposition 1, Governor Newsom’s proposal to improve care for those suffering from mental illness and addiction. It will create thousands of inpatient and outpatient resources for those experiencing the most serious mental health challenges.

Prop. 1, the only proposition on California ballots this March, asks voters to approve a $6.4 billion bond for treatment beds and housing units catering to people with mental illnesses and addictions. It also would restructure some current funding to funnel more mental health money toward housing.

In addition to funding 6,800 beds in facilities treating mental illness and addiction, the bond would create up to 4,350 new homes for people who need mental health and addiction services — 2,350 of which would be reserved for veterans, according to the state’s Legislative Analyst's Office. You can read more about CMA’s support for Prop. 1 HERE.

REMINDER: IN THE LONG TRADITION OF MEDICAL ORCHESTRAS, A SAN DIEGO PHYSICIANS ORCHESTRA IS BEING ORGANIZED. ARE YOU INTERESTED?

This next item falls under the category of physician wellness. It has been said that physicians likely have the greatest participation in music than any other professional group. There are currently 38 medical orchestras in the United States, with most of them located east of the Mississippi. The lone medical orchestra in California is presently at Stanford.

A new initiative underway seeks to create a San Diego Physician Chamber Orchestra. David M. Steinhorn, MD, FAAP is beginning the process of recruiting interested physician musicians or medical and nursing school faculty. Rehearsals will take place every two weeks at a central location currently under negotiation. As a chamber orchestra, the initial membership will be 24–30 members with pairs of winds, percussions, keyboard and the balance strings.

Please spread the word and contact Dr. Steinhorn with any questions at SDMedicalOrchestra@gmail.com. Interested musicians should include a brief description of their musical background including instrument, self–rated playing level, and contact information.
