REMEMBER TO VOTE: CMA ENDORSES PROP 1 ON MARCH 5 PRIMARY BALLOT California Medical Association has strongly endorsed Proposition 1, Governor Newsom’s proposal to improve care for those suffering from mental illness and addiction. It will create thousands of inpatient and outpatient resources for those experiencing the most serious mental health challenges. Prop. 1, the only proposition on California ballots this March, asks voters to approve a $6.4 billion bond for treatment beds and housing units catering to people with mental illnesses and addictions. It also would restructure some current funding to funnel more mental health money toward housing. In addition to funding 6,800 beds in facilities treating mental illness and addiction, the bond would create up to 4,350 new homes for people who need mental health and addiction services — 2,350 of which would be reserved for veterans, according to the state’s Legislative Analyst's Office. Obesity management began to shift dramatically in 2014 with the first FDA approval of a GLP–1 receptor agonist (RA) for weight loss. Things really took off in 2021 with the approval of another medication to this class, semaglutide. Weight loss with these medications is significant, but so are the side effects. And, it appears that patients are at high risk of regaining weight after discontinuing these medications. Combined with the high cost and patchy insurance coverage, equitable access is a concern.
