Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: An important event to consider attending if you are a medical provider involved in the treatment of cerebrovascular disorders and stroke is the annual Sun Valley Cerebrovascular Conference 2023 on January 19-21st in Sun Valley, Idaho. This conference is geared towards neurologists, neurosurgeons, primary care providers, emergency physicians, hospitalists, interventional neurologists, interventional neuroradiologists, EMS providers, nurses, stroke coordinators, and allied health professionals associated with stroke care. For more information and/or to register, please CLICK HERE.

The County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency has shared important informed about treating the COVID–19 Omnicron Subvariants:

Reports as of November 28, 2022 indicate that the majority of the circulating SARS CoV–2 variants in San Diego County are expected to be resistant to bebtelovimab.

All symptomatic patients over the age of 12 years and =40 kg with a positive COVID–19 test of any type should be evaluated for treatment with one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommended treatment options.

Currently, the primary outpatient treatment options are nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (Paxlovid) and remdesivir (Veklury).

Early COVID treatment in multi–generational families, especially families of color, protects grandparents and vulnerable individuals.

In addition, please review the CAHAN Alert which is the top item under What to Know …’ below.

A final reminder: Earlier this year, California Medical Association (CMA) worked with the Governor and legislature to secure $1.3 billion in the state budget to provide retention bonuses for California’s physicians and other health care providers. The retention bonuses, of up to $1,000, will be available to employees of hospitals, clinics that are 1206(l)s and affiliated with a hospital, or skilled nursing facilities and physicians who provide patient care in those facilities during the eligibility period, which ran from July 30 to October 28, 2022.

The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) will be administering the health care worker retention bonus payments. DHCS has created a two–step process to receive a retention bonus.

In the first step, qualifying independent/solo physicians will need to register with DHCS. If you are a physician employed by a medical group or other eligible health care facility, your employer is required to apply on your behalf; therefore, you should not register/apply on your own. Contact your employer for more information.

The deadline to register is December 21, 2022, but we encourage you to do so as soon as possible to minimize delays.

In the second step, the application portal will open on November 29, 2022, and all requests for payment must be submitted by December 30, 2022. DHCS anticipates issuing payments in January 2023.

Finally, this is the final NYCU before Christmas and New Year’s so on behalf of the San Diego County Medical Society, I wish you and yours Happy Holidays. After such a challenging — and hopeful — year the time we spend with our loved ones and the celebration of Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa and New Year’s Day have particular meaning for so many of us. May we all share together in a healthier and happier year in 2023!

As always, let me know if you have any questions! Paul Hegyi, CEO
