SDCMS News You Can Use

TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 2025

Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: In these difficult and demanding times, physicians are standing up and speaking out on a range of issues. Please allow me to draw your attention to a few of our local medical doctors who deserve thanks for excellent opinion columns — ‘Op–Eds’ — which appeared in the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper in recent weeks.

Dr. Devesh Vashishtha wrote compellingly about how Medicaid cuts will hurt his patients at City Heights community health center. You can read his column HERE. Crystal Wiley Cené, MD, a Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego writes about the importance of DEI HERE. Dr. Desiree Shapiro, along with UCSD School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry post–graduate researcher Hirsh Makhija, MS and Judy E. Davidson, DNP, RN, MCCN, a Nurse Scientist for UCSD, wrote an important and powerful piece on the mental health struggles of female physicians you can read HERE.

I’m grateful to say that Desiree, Hirsh and Judy — along with Dr. Sidney Zisook, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at UC San Diego, have prepared an article on this issue for the May issue of San Diego Physician magazine, the official publication of San Diego County Medical Society. We are very excited for that submission.

IMPORTANT REMINDER | RESCHEDULED TIJUANA RIVER VALLEY COMMUNITY SURVEY RESULTS CLINICAL TOWN HALL IS 6:007:00 PM ON APRIL 30TH

San Diego County Medical Society (SDCMS), in partnership with the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA), invite you to attend a Tijuana River Valley Community Survey Results Clinical Town Hall. We will also provide a Q&A Session between attendees and the speakers’ panel to allow dialogue for discussion. The County has also featured results of the CASPER study HERE.

Speakers will include Dr. Ankita Kadakia, Interim Public Health Officer, Public Health Services; Heather Buonomo, Division Director of Environmental Health, Department of Environmental Health & Quality; and Paula Forbis, Air Pollution Control Officer, San Diego County Air Pollution Control Distirct.
