Physicians: Last year, CMA co-sponsored Prop. 56 to save lives and improve access to quality medical services for all Californians. Gov. Brown’s proposed state budget (click here for details) would divert Prop. 56 tobacco tax funds to cover the state’s general fund obligations, despite the fact that California voters overwhelmingly supported improving Medi-Cal payments to ensure that patients can see a doctor when and where they need one.

With more than 14 million Californians — one in three — relying on Medi-Cal to provide basic healthcare and specialty care for serious diseases, the stakes are high. California cannot afford to continue starving this program by diverting Prop. 56 revenues to cover the state’s general fund obligations.

If you haven't already done so, please click here to renew your 2017 SDCMS-CMA membership so that we can, from a position of unity and strength, work with the Legislature and the Brown administration to develop a solution that doesn’t supplant the will of California voters or put low-income families and communities at risk. And if you have renewed your membership for 2017, I sincerely thank you! — Mihir Parikh, MD, President, SDCMS
